The Ebrach Monastery was founded in 1127 as one of the first monasteries east of the Rhine. In 1200, work began on building the church, which was finished in 1280. It is 86 m long and built in the Gothic style.with a beautiful rose window at the entrance of the building. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 and became a parish church and since 1851, the monastery buildings have served as a prison, nowadays known as Justizvollzugsanstalt Ebrach. The prisoners work in the gardens, flower, vegetable and herb and in the fields, living off of the “fruits of their labour”. It’s quite amazing!
