Capelinhos - Volcano - Faial

The Capelinhos located on the island of Faial in the Azores -  the name "Capelinhos" is associated with the volcano, it refers to the western cape of the parish of Capelo. Every time we drove through Capelo - my DH would jokingly say "Acapello".

The volcanic eruption at Capelinhos lasted for 13 months, from September 27, 1957 until October 24, 1958, it enlarged the land by 2.4 km², it created 300 seismic events, hurled ash 1 km, destroyed 300 houses in the parishes of Capelo and Praia do Norte and caused the evacuation of 2,000 people, most of whom emigrated to Canada and the US.  The volcano is now in dormancy but is still part of an active volcano that can still create seismic and volcanic events.

We had an amazing time walking around the volcano area and climbing up to the lighthouse.  The land formations and the scenery here are stunning and when you walk down to the waters edge the volcanic black sands on the beaches are stunning.
